VG Burgers has Several Gluten-Free Menu Items!By Evan Sandsmark -
VG Burgers bills itself as a quick-serve restaurant, and while the service may be quick, it is very different from any fast-food eatery you’ve likely encountered. First and most notably, everything on the menu is 100 percent vegan and organic. We doubt there is a single item on most fast-food restaurants that can claim that status. And more relevantly to this site’s readers, there are several items on the menu that are gluten free!
One notable aspect of VG Burgers gluten-free options is that they are spread out over the several categories of the menu. There are eight different categories of food (starters, soup of the day, sandwiches, etc.), and all but two have gluten-free options. Moreover, nearly all the starters, salads, and bowls are gluten free, and the soup of the day is at least sometimes gluten free (the online menu lists chili as the soup of the day – yum – which does happen to be gluten free, but the soup changes from day to day, so we can’t be sure that the soup is always made without gluten).
OK, so there are salads and appetizers that are gluten free, but the name of the restaurant is VG Burgers, so the real burning question is: are there gluten-free burgers? As luck would have, there are – both the standard Veggie Burger and the Black Bean Burger are entirely gluten free. Granted, this is only two out of the nine options, but hey, two is better than none. And besides that, the black bean burger is especially good, and the average restaurant hardly has any gluten-free options (if indeed they have any at all).
Unfortunately, the menu lists no gluten-free items among the seven sandwiches; however, you can get gluten-free bread with any sandwich, so if the other ingredients used do not have gluten, you’re left with, of course, a gluten-free sandwich, even though it’s not on the menu. There are no gluten-free burrito or wrap options on the menu, and as far as we can tell, there isn’t a way around this. Even so, VG Burgers is a relatively new operation, so maybe they’ll add some gluten-free items to round out their menu. If eight out of eight menu categories had gluten-free options, that would be pretty impressive!
