Free Gluten-Free Events at Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage in BoulderBy Evan Sandsmark -
Back at the start of the summer, we wrote about some of the free gluten-free resources offered by Natural Grocers at Vitamin Cottage. In that article, we mentioned some of the events hosted by NGVC that focus on gluten-free eating, and at last several events are on the horizon. There will be gluten-free seminars and tasting fairs in both Boulder and Lafayette in the next couple of months, and below you will find all the relevant details about these events.
The first event, the Gluten-Free Living Seminar, will be held on September 16th at Boulder’s Natural Grocers from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM. Immediately following the seminar, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM, there will be a Gluten-Free Health Fair. In case you miss these events or live to the east of town, you can catch these same events at Lafayette’s Natural Grocers, which is right along South Boulder Road. (You cross Highway 287 heading east and it is one your right hand side.) At the Lafayette location, the Gluten-Free Living Seminar will be from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM and the Gluten-Free Tasting Fair from 11:00 PM to 3:00 PM. So, if you eat gluten-free, shop at NGVC, and live somewhere in the Boulder or Lafayette area, September 16th and October 25th are good days to go shopping.
Now, a few notes about the events themselves. First, the events should be largely the same at both locations, but they are led by two different health coaches, Diane Shepard and Helen Dohrman, of the Boulder and Lafayette stores, respectively. Dohrman was our original point of contact when we were made aware of the NGVC’s free resources for gluten-free eaters, and she called these upcoming events to our attention. Each coach presumably adds her own spin to the talks and tastings, but the GF seminar and the fair that follows are consistently offered at NGVCs across the country, so they are to some extent standardized. (One thing that isn’t standardized is the name of the gluten-free tasting. On NGVC’s page for Boulder events, it is called the “Gluten-Free Health Fair,” and on the Lafayette page, it is referred to as the “Health and Delicious Tasting Fair.” In Dohrman’s email to us, the event was billed as the “Gluten-Free Tasting Fair.” By all indications, though, these are merely different names for the same event.)
As for what to expect when you show up on September 16th or October 25th, the name of the events are fairly self-explanatory. The seminar is of course an educational resource, one in which “you’ll learn about gluten, the problems with gluten, and the basics for the healthiest approach to gluten-free living,” as Dohrman put it to us. You’ll learn how to plan gluten-free meals and shop efficiently for gluten-free foods, and you’ll learn how to live an overall more healthy life through dietary supplementation. The tasting fair is, well, a tasting fair, one that will allow you to try various gluten-free products available in the store. So, if you decide to attend, you can learn some tips about living gluten-free, try some products, and perhaps buy some groceries to take home. The customer and the grocer both win.
